Maritime Plaza I & II are the first two phases of a multi-phased office development located at the intersection of 12th and M Streets, SE. Maritime Plaza I was delivered in October of 2001 and Maritime Plaza II was delivered in January 2003. GEF was the team's landscape architects that had to rapidly adjust to the changing pace, site conditions, needs and ideas of our client; Lincoln Properties. GEF identified areas that could be enhanced including the old stone walls, originally slated for demolition. Lincoln Properties and their architects HKS were willing to listen. If the stone walls were found to be sound and the plans would work the walls could stay. Today the Phase I building look out on the stone wall now topped with Jasmine. The pedestrian bridge access to Maritime Plaza I provide a great view of the wall and plantings. The sloping ground is planted in waves of plant material that bloom at different times of year. The upward blooming Korean Dogwood when viewed from the floors above and the pedestrian bridge has four seasons of interest. The large anchor at the intersection rests on a compass rose of quarried flag. The two colors of the flagstone give the compass rose its distinct look. The anchor is surrounded by sea grasses and Blue Russian sage. Smaller versions of the compass rose are repeated at each doorway. Together these elements solidify the projects naval theme with its location that adjoins the Washington Navy Yard and the Anacostia River.
